A Brief Discourse on Painter's Tape

Blue painter's tape is my friend, but seldom have I used it for actual painting. It's great for temporary projects, much like sticky notes, because it marks the spot but does not leave a residue. It's come in handy as we prepare for our move. 

We played around with the arrangement of our family room furniture as we tried to figure out what size area rug we will need in the new house. The blue painter's tape was used to designate the boundaries of an 8x10 foot rug.

Then on another day we used the tape to mark out on our deck the dimensions of the lanai at the new house. Our concern was that our current table and chair set was too large for the smaller lanai.

With the use of the tape we realized that indeed, our furniture is too big in one direction. The furniture fit, but there was not going to be enough space between the back of the chairs and the walls for people to walk past, especially if they had a plate of food in hand.

Thankfully, these conundrums have been resolved. For the family room we decided that only the front feet of the chairs and couch need to be on the 8x10 rug; and for the lanai, we bought four metal stools to replace the large-scale chairs on the long sides of the table.

As I think about blue painter's tape, it occurs to me how many of us are trained for one purpose and so often we end up getting called to do something else with that education. Specialization is great but to be truly useful, we should be open to opportunities to help in a variety of ways.
